Your rights & duties

Internal Responsibility System (IRS): Fire safety is a shared duty.

  • Employer duty: Provide safe workplace, functional equipment, and a Fire Safety Plan.
  • Employee duty: Report hazards (blocked exits), participate in drills, follow emergency procedures.
  • Right to know: You must be informed of any flammable materials (WHMIS 2015) in your area.
Module 1: Fire science

The Fire Triangle: Fuel, Heat, Oxygen — remove one and the fire extinguishes.

Classes of fire (Canada)

  • Class A: Wood, paper, cloth, rubber, plastics.
  • Class B: Flammable liquids (gasoline, oil, grease).
  • Class C: Energized electrical equipment.
  • Class D: Combustible metals (magnesium, titanium).
  • Class K: Cooking oils & fats (vegetable/animal).
Module 2: Prevention & housekeeping
  • 45cm (18-inch) rule: Nothing stored within 45cm of sprinkler heads.
  • No clutter: Exits, stairwells, hallways 100% clear.
  • Electrical safety: Only CSA/ULC approved equipment. Never daisy‑chain power bars.
  • Smoking/vaping: Designated outdoor areas.
  • Space heaters: 1 metre away from combustibles.
Module 3: R.E.A.C.T.
  • R – Remove anyone in danger.
  • E – Ensure door closed.
  • A – Activate pull station.
  • C – Call 911.
  • T – Try to extinguish or evacuate.
Module 4: Evacuation
  • Know two ways out.
  • Back‑of‑hand test before opening door.
  • Crawl low if smoke.
  • Never use elevators.
  • Muster point for head count.
Module 5: P.A.S.S.

Only fight if smaller than a wastebasket.

P.A.S.S.
  • P – Pull pin.
  • A – Aim at base.
  • S – Squeeze.
  • S – Sweep.
